Foodie Pen Pals: October 2013

Time for Foodie Pen Pals again! This time I got a parcel sent to me from the lovely Kim from the Netherlands, and I think this has been my favourite package that I’ve received so far! I unpacked this just after the clocks turned back last week and it suddenly got dark around four, and it felt like I had been sent a wonderful care package for the cold, rainy days of November.

The first thing I got were some crispy apple chips from her local farmer’s market – I may have eaten half the package already because they are seriously addicting. Then there were also some chocolate sprinkles that Kim told me were actually mostly eaten on toast (not arguing with that!) as well as some mints featuring the King’s name.

I also got some tea – appropriately named Herbst (or Autumn) storm, since London got some pretty stormy weather that day – which is tea with some warming spices and apple pieces. To go with it, she also packed some stroopwafels, which look amazing and I can’t wait to try them both.

Kim had asked me if there was anything specifically Dutch I would like, and I’ve always wanted to try Speculoos (which is a spread consisting of ground up biscuits essentially) but have never been able to find it anywhere… so Kim sent me a jar! And it’s delicious. She mentioned that it’s one of her favourite spreads, and I can see why. Thank you so much for introducing me to it, Kim! :)

Foodie Pen Pals: August 2013

A while ago, I stumbled upon Foodie Pen Pals, a lovely little programme that matches up different people from around Europe who then send each other a little parcels full of food goodies. I thought it sounded like a fun idea, so this month I decided to give it a go! I had a lot of fun scavenging for food for my pen pal, Cees (from the Netherlands), and got a lovely little parcel myself from Cara! Here’s what she sent over:

I said that I liked both sweet and savoury snacks, so she sent over a nice mix of both, starting out with these Chili & Lemon Potato Grills – which I’ve never tried before – as well as some chilli rice crackers. Both taste excellent, and I have to say that I’m an especially big fan of the rice crackers – they’re really tasty with just the right amount of spice.

Cara also packed some fruit & nut mixes, which I love! Yogurt coated raisins are the best, so that was spot on. Then there’s a coconut bar – another one I’ve never tried, but I’m quite excited to since I quite like coconut. Finally – since I might have hinted at the fact that I like tea *cough* – I also got a pack of Vanilla Chai. (Which is excellent since I’ve been sort of on a hunt for the best Chai out there and this is one I haven’t tried yet.) So a massive thank you to Cara for the thoughtful parcel, I really enjoyed it!
